Installing RB on a formatted Ipod
« on: November 02, 2007, 02:52:38 PM »
Hi.

I'm trying to install rockbox on a totally formatted Ipod 5.5G. Without itunes on it or any other file. Just a clean Ipod which I formatted in windows, clean 30G. I try to do that because the Itunes makes me some troubles with the Itunes and I try some alternatives.

The problem occurs when I try to install the Ipod Patcher. It doesn't find the Ipod. Is there a way to install the installer without the Ipod having any files on it or by creating directories on the ipod and making the patcher think that is an ipod with itunes?

Thanks.

You don't have the Apple firmware on your iPod. Restore it using iTunes, then try reinstalling.

I know that. I want to install rockbox without the Ipod having the original apple firmware on it 'cause it makes problems on my Ipod. I want to know is there a way to do it without the firmware...

No - the Rockbox install utilities all assume a working ipod.  They modify the existing firmware partition to insert the Rockbox bootloader.

As has been said, restore your ipod, then you can install Rockbox.

When the ipod is totally clean and formatted i can use it as usb drive no problem. When I do restore in itunes, the Ipod gets stuck whenever I try to access it from my computer or Itunes. And it takes the Ipod something like 10min to load the firmware after restart (which is not normal...).

So I was trying to install rockbox instead, but it doesn't work without the original firmware and with it I can't access the Ipod.

How about if you uninstall iTunes after you've done the restore ?

I think I tried it. I tried to connect the ipod to an Itunesless computer and it still gives me the same problem. In ubuntu it shows the drive but it says there is no drive there.

This does not sound promising.  If your native Apple firmware is not functioning properly then it's a long shot to expect Rockbox to function properly.
