Why does ROCKbox take so long to resume playback after turning on?

When should we run these options in the background? And will running them in the background cause a higher probability of a lockup or track skip/delay? Thanks for the info.

my e280 just takes a few seconds after hitting resume, but i do sometimes get that minor pause in the beginning of a song.
from what i've been able to gleen reading the manual for my sansa e280 (i'm no pro though) you should really only have to 'initialize now' one time (the first time - unless you want to clear you runtime data). after that you can select 'auto update' (to update every time you boot up) or just select 'update' on your own every now and then. however i don't think the 'auto update' function will update deleted files (if i'm remembering/understanding the manual correctly).
i have noticed that there seems to be a bit more chance of a delay when running update in the background (but that could just be my imagination).
