Gigabeat clock loses time of day
« on: October 28, 2007, 12:59:13 PM »
I've had my F40 for a week now, running rockbox and it's great.
There is one weird issue, every now and then when I power it up the time of day
shows as _:_:_ and I have to reset the clock.  The unit was not powered down
using the battery switch.  I think I may have been using the unit around 12AM when
this happened, if that means anything.

This is probably a hardware problem with my player, I see no reason to blame rockbox at this point.  Has anybody else had this happen?  (BTW the battery was no where near discharged at any point).

hmm strange, that has only happened to me once, and that was after i installed my new battery, you should check your battery connection, well actually, have you been expireincing wierd battery life and or sudden dap shut downs? you also might not be saving settings. it could also be that the RTC in your player is malfunctioning

I haven't had the player long enough to know if I have battery issues.  But, so far I don't think so.  A lose battery connection or a bad battery switch should have showed up with the player re-booting randomly while in use.  This hasn't happened.  Only a random corruption of the rtc.  If that's my only problem with the player I can live with it.  I don't use the thing as an alarm clock (and IIRC only the iPod has that function anyway).

We discussed this problem before: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=11247.0.  I posted about this in the following Flyspray entry around the end of June: 7337.  Apparently this behavior in the iRiver units is considered to be a hardware issue.  It could be that this is the case for the Gigabeats as well, though I have yet to discern any real pattern to when it occurs.  It certainly does not happen every time I fully charge my player.

I noticed this problem last night at exactly midnight, and found it is repeatable, every Saturday, midnight!  It doesn't happen on other days of the week.  I posted it to the bug tracker:

I was beginning to suspect it was software since I noticed
that it always happened at Midnight.  I did not make the connection
that it only happened on sat->sun though.  I tried to reproduce
it last night (sun->mon) and it didn't happen.  Makes sense, since
the only time I ever leave the player running late is on the weekend.
(I've been falling asleep listening to old Jean Shepherd shows).
But it seemed like it only happened if the player was ON at the time.

Now that the fix is SVN I guess I'll update my sources and build the
latest (is the fix in a current build yet?).

Question .. Does the Gigabeat have a wakeup alarm?  I don't think
I see a way to get to this in the menus?
