Gigabeat August versus September-October Build/Features

(1/1)

thenrik:
Hi:

In August the Gigabeat build had the A button selecting the current directory. In September the A button was switched back to Play/Pause and while hitting the Menu button twice brings the user to the File (Root) area which requires you to then select Music and then go through the tree and then select a new folder.

I support four or five people and help them update their Gigabeat Rockbox players and at each update, people were pleased with new features or even if they didn't notice, not displeased.

Everyone commented that it the Play/Pause switch just didn't feel intuitive and requested to go back to the August firmware and finally I've gone back to the August firmware myself. The current firmware makes it difficult to navigate between folders.

I would hate to lose out on future developments. How do others feel about the changes?

  Thanks,

Tom

All that were switched were the function of the A button and the center of the cross. No functionality was lost. Tap the center of the cross to leave the WPS in the way the A button used to.

There is a thread on this in the forum already, please make use of the search feature in the future, as you could, and should, have commented there. It's even in "announcements" making it quite easy to find.

The fact that it was just a swap of two buttons, and no functionality was actually removed, should've been noticeable from the changelog message, as well as the update to the manual that was included with the change.

Oddly enough, checking your old posts revealed you saying "The recent A and Select swap is a nice touch. My wife and I use our Rockbox Gigabeat F players every day" showing that at one point you were aware that it was merely a swap and the functionality that used to be on the "A" button was now on "Select" and vice versa, and were in fact pleased with it.

Needless to say, while it may not feel "intuitive", this seems to mostly relate to the fact that people are either used to it, or used to the Gigabeat original firmware. "A" was already functioning as what the "Play" button on other players does in every screen BUT the WPS, this change just made it so that since it was doing the job of "Play" in most places, it would now do the job in all places, and at the same time provided the ability to more freely use the player with just the cross (previously once in the WPS it was impossible to leave unless you used buttons other than the cross) which is an improvement for one-handed use.
