Rockboy buttons with remote

the other day I found a music app for gameboy that I wanted to try on rockboy.
But I found it usseless because rockboy can't understand combinations of buttons on my iRiver H120 - as you probably know. (Play+directions work, but I need another key+directions).

But there are more keys to connect - with a remote!
Would it be possible to have other keys mapped from the iRiver remote?
Or there a limitation with the hardware that also stops this idea?

As far as I know that should be possible (I'm sure someone will jump in and correct if not), you'll need to do some digging in the rockboy source to make it possible though.

This would be awesome with the Griffin AirClick for my iPod 4G. I really hope the remote gets implemented some time soon.

There is an awful lot of additional work required just for remotes to work on iPod - both a serial driver and the apple accessory protocol need to be implemented.  You will notice the OP mentioned the iriver H100 on which the remotes already work perfectly.

Is the remote compatibility for the iPod being looked into or is it just a side project?

This is getting off topic now, but as far as I know no-one is currently looking into iPod accessory support.
