Is it possible to create a playlist with separate audio settings for each song?
« on: October 24, 2007, 12:20:18 PM »
Hello everyone. I have a Sansa 280 and I LOVE ROCKbox! I was just wondering...You know how we all have MP3s that have inconsistent volume levels, some our recorded louder than others...Well I was wondering, is there anyway to create a database that will save each MP3's audio settings? In other words, is there anyway to save each file's volume settings to a playlist so you won't need to keep lowering or raising the volume everytime a new song loads. Thanks.

What you're describing is something called ReplayGain - which Rockbox already supports.

You also can adjust the volume levels with MP3Gain--a great (and free) tool.

Please note this is not the same as replay gain.
mp3 gain rewrites the actual mp3 where as true replay gain operates on the mp3 tags. this is what rockbox uses.
there are two tags one for track gain and one for album gain
(to add these tags, in windows, you can use foobar2000.

Thats not true.

mp3gain - scans the file and writes tags only.
mp3gain -a or
mp3gain -r - will write tags and modify the actual volume.

And theres the optional -k option you can use to prevent clipping.

However the tag writing method of mp3gain does not work with Rockbox. mp3gain writes the gain info to apeV2 tags which is not a method that Rockbox supports. Last time I checked, Rockbox only support gain info written to id3 tags for mp3 files. Correct me if things have changed (I am mainly a Vorbis user).

My understanding in that MP3Gain is entirely reversible.  Has worked just fine for me (in Rockbox and otherwise).
