Hello, I originally had a hard drive problem and replaced it with same type new drive. I installed Rockbox and and flashed my Hex file
with boot loader v6 and all was great! My new drive was now humming along and was working great with Rockbox loading as default
every time and without any problems. I choose the menu option to build a database just for kicks, all seemed normal. Since my battery
now was getting low I decided to power down and recharge. Since my stock charger was not at home I decided to charge via my digital
readout power supply. I found a cord with correct size barrel plug on the end and verified the pwr jacks polarity as + to center pin, - to
shell as this was documented on bottom of unit. I dialed up the current until the pwr supply was reading 5.0V output, the current was
at approx 500-600 mA when reaching 5V. After about 2 hrs the units green charge light was still on. The unit was somewhat warm from
charging as normally it would be, I then decided to unplug it for usage. The unit would not respond (power on) when pressing the
power button. I then pressed reset and and it booted into Iriver firmware with some gibberish on the display and was acting lethargic
and unresponsive. I was able to plug the unit into my home pc usb and see the file system, but after unplugging the usb I could not
power the unit off by units power button. Now the unit will not boot at all! If I press power on...nothing, then I press reset and the
display shows Iriver logo with back light on and the red HDD light is constant with no hard drive action. If I press reset again only the
back light goes off, pressing reset again the log comes back again with the back light back on. If I slide the LOCK switch on the side to
on, upon reset the unit will show as locked and shut off completely. Since I now have a Addonics IDE adapter for plugging my drive into
my home pc I decided to see if it was ok. I plugged the drive into my home pc and all was ok. I believe that the ROM
flash data my have been been corrupted and maybe this explains the no bootup symptom I now have. I now (using reset only) can't
boot the unit past the stalled out Iriver splash screen in order to update or (flash) the firmware back if is corrupted. Can corrupted
firmware stop the spin-up of the hardrive as well? If my ROM data is corrupted can someone show me how to externally power it up
and reprogram it without removing it from the circuit board? Is externally reprogramming the chip even possible if this is my problem?
I have a good deal of electronics testing equipment and tools if needed for I used to repair consumer electronics previous to my current
job. Any helpful incite into fixing my Iriver from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

If the flash chip is broken you need a BDI interface to reprogram that chip.

Thanks for your reply.
Where can I learn more about a BDI interface and how to use it to reprogram the ROM chip ?
Thanks again.

The wiki holds some information. For generic information about a BDI just ask google ...
