Audioscrobbling does not work
« on: October 20, 2007, 03:21:53 PM »
I have 4th gen 20GB ipod that I use to scrobble my tracks to my last.fm. Recently however no tracks are ever scrobbled, I've used serveral different programs and they all say the information was sent correctly, but the tracks don't show up on my profile. Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you want to tell that submitting the log to last.fm didn't work? In that case this has nothing to do with Rockbox -- Rockbox writes the log file, it does not submit it. Unless you have issues creating the log file in the first place ...

I noticed this too.  It's completely Last.fm's fault.  If I look at Recent Tracks (http://www.last.fm/user/username/charts/?charttype=recenttracks), it lists the correct information, but the "Top Artists this Week" section seems to take a while to update.

Also, they enforce a limit on how long ago the track was played.  They don't let you upload a song that was played before last Sunday (I think). You can work around this if you really want to, by just changing the timestamps in .scrobbler.log.

The timestamps are in Unix format (There are some converters at the bottom of that page).

Hrm.. and take note of this:

Spam filter (sanity checks like claiming to have played 10 songs in 10 seconds -- not possible)

Protocol 1.2 allows you to submit out of order, so no more timestamp editing.

   * track must have been listened to for more than 50% of its length.

Is this referring to what Rockbox records, or is it just for information on what the PC client (QTScrobbler, etc) will discard?  Reason being is that Last.fm says:
Quote from: http://www.audioscrobbler.net/wiki/Protocol1.1
Each song should be posted to the server when it is 50% or 120 seconds complete, whichever comes first.

I don't know if the 120 seconds clause was revoked in 1.2, I can't find a Protocol 1.2 article on Last.fm.

I wasn't talking about submitting out of order, but I thought I read somewhere that there was a hard limit on how long ago it was played, but I can't seem to find it now.

It's referring to what Rockbox will record in the log file.  The scrobbler support in Rockbox was written to support the spec for portable players at: http://www.audioscrobbler.net/wiki/Portable_Player_Logging

The idea at the time was that the official Last.fm client would look for the log file in any removable drives when they were connected and automatically submit the contents, but the support for this was never added - AFAIK they have no plans to do so either.

The protocol 1.2 spec is at: http://www.audioscrobbler.net/development/protocol/
