Question about preamp/precut for replaygain and equalizer
« on: October 20, 2007, 10:34:19 AM »
Hi,

i would like to know if the preamp setting from the replaygain menu and from the equalizer menu get applied to the audio separately or combined. So if i for example set the equalizer precut to -9dB and the replaygain preamp to +9dB, would rockbox not change the volume at all or would it process first one value and then the other?

My goal is it to lower the volume of files that have no replaygain tags because they are usually much louder. But my concern is that for files with replaygain tags this procedure could result in either clipping or in reduced precision if one preamp is processed after the other.

DSP is done at > 16 bit precision, so it doesn't really matter.

But to answer the question, the values are combined. It would be inefficient to first multiply with one value, and then do it again with another value. :)

Why not run all files through foobar2000 for missing replay gain tags or have you got different formats involved?

I think the idea is to avoid blasting yourself with untagged files accidentally.  I've done it before and its annoying.

I try to keep my files tagged properly, but sometimes it just happens, that a file without replaygain tags slips onto my player. And there are also fileformats where rockbox doesn't support replaygaintags yet (for example WMA*).

*I wonder if replaygainsupport for WMA was committed before or after i wrote this...
