This usually means the harddrive in your ipod is physically damaged in some way. There's not much you can do except replace it.

Please rename your thread with a descriptive title as our posting guidelines require.

As for your issue, try a different USB cable, a different USB port on your computer, and/or a different computer.

Before you give up on your hard disk you might try re-installing the software.
You will lose all your music on the disk, but at this point you probably have already.
Connect the ipod and use itunes to restore the ipod firmware.  After itunes finishes you have to connect the ipod to an ac powered charger (NOT the computer) so have one ready.  When the ipod displays the wall outlet icon unplug the usb cable from the computer and connect it to the charger.  With luck you will then get the apple icon and a progress bar.  The ipod wil then reboot again into the main menu.

If you get this far and the ipod survives a shut down and reboot (hold the play/pause until it shuts down, then slide the hold switch to the lock position, then to the unlock position), you may be in luck.  If this doesn't work, you'll have to look for a replacement hard disk.
