discharge into the adapter (Kirkoff's law)...depends on the power supply design of the player.  Also the battery and the power supply may both share the load.

Yes indeed.  The gigabeat battery seems to have a maximum voltage when charged of low 4.somethings, so 4.5V is a little close, but probably OK.  However, me personally I would just get a 5V charger.  5V is a very common value, and really shouldn't be too hard to find.  You can buy cigarette lighter chargers that come with multiple tips pretty easily.
