Anomaly - you are right - holding REC is of course only needed if the computer is actually on at the time, to stop it going into USB connected mode.

I have also noticed this exact same behaviour but put it down to my battery replacement (which coincided with the release of rockbox for the H300's). This is with wall charging as well as via USB. Now I usually charge the player in the 'stopped mode', i.e. on but with nothing playing.

I also replaced my battery, but rockbox was installed a day before and still exhibited the same behaviour before the battery change.
Rockbox+new battery has made me love my player all over again :)
