Partial screen use
« on: October 18, 2007, 03:45:25 AM »
Hello everybody ;)

I've installed Rockbox to save my iPod ;) Actually, my screen is partially broken (screen attached with this message)

So I was looking for a way to mod or create a theme that uses only the part of the screen that is unbroken. Is there a way to do it?

Thankls everybody in advance :)

Yes, for the "playing" part, but for the menus?

use a smaller font? i just tried the default theme and it seems the font it picks should be small enough for you to see all the settings.

Half my screen is dead, and a small border to the left. I tried to use very small fonts (to the point I barely can read) but still it is not enough. And with many songs/artists, i would never be able to see the bottom ;)

Then you'll need to compile a custom build modified to use only the portion of your screen that is visible. This will require some C programming skills

The other option is to simply use Voice and navigate mostly blind.

I'd rather try Voice :) My C skills are very limited^^

Thanks both of you for your answers ;)

in the future look into getting a new screen, other wise there are ways to create smaller fonts and to create a wps that will show the info you want.

Why not just get a new LCD for your iPod?
You can buy one here: http://www.ifixit.com/

iPod surgery isn't that hard, though you do need special tools to open them.  You can get the tools at the above link as well. (The iPod mini is an exception, it is VERY easy to open up and work on.)  iPod LCD's are connected to the PC main board via a press on connector, no soldering is required to make the repair.  While you've got the thing open you might want to upgrade it to a larger battery as well.  There are many after market vendors that sell larger capacity iPod batteries that fit in place of the original and provide as much as 100% more run time (VERY good idea if you run rockbox!).

If you compile your own build, you could add the this patch: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/5899?pagenum=2, it will allow you to decide how many lines you want to show in the menu.

Then you simply customize the .cfg of all the themes you want so that they fit your screen.

I hope this helps. It's cheaper than buying a new lcd, and easier than voice navigation. :)
