HELP ME KEEP MY PHOTO ALIVE
« on: October 16, 2007, 04:14:54 PM »
I have a 10 GB ipod photo that crashed. I put rockbox on it, and then use an IpodService (was on ipod) update found by Itunes to update my ipod. Now when ever it turns on, it shows a black and white picture of a plug with an arrow pointing to an outlet. Can some one please tell me what to do. I don't have the charger that goes into the wall. Only the one that connects to my computer.

Have you tried charging it?

You make it sound like it broke before you put Rockbox on it.

this happened to my friends ipod photo (No Rockbox installed) as well before, we've tried plugging it on high powered usb port and wall charger, nothing happened.. what i did was open the ipod and charge the battery using a li-ion charger seperately, and it worked!.

I could be wrong, but I think plugging it into a power source that is not the computer will fix this.  I remember on my old mini after I updated the firmware I had to plug it into the charger (not the computer).  A little progress bar would fill up then it'd be done and you're set.

yes that is right, normally after upgrading on latest iPod firmware (apple OS) using itunes or ipodservice, it would ask you to use a wall charger afterward, perhaps upgrading firmware requires more power than what the battery would provide.

If you are using an USB wall charger NOT made specifically for the ipod you might have a problem because the iPod looks for a specific termination of the data lines to know that it is connected to a wall charger capable of the required current.

I built my own charger and tied each data line high to 5v with a 75 kohm 1% resistor, and also tied low with a 49.9 kohm resistor (well I actually used two 100 kohm 1% resistors in parallel).  This specific termination on each data line tells the ipod that it may draw 500ma from the power supply.

This data came from Apple documentation.
