Suspect I will need more hand-holding but will see how far I can get now...

Try this program: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197 It's as simple as the windows formatting tool.

Bextable:
I got further with the 'Ridgecrop' formatting tool, but still kept running into problems.
The one Mad Cow suggested was great, so I'm all fat32 formatted now.
