i took off the blue rubber and the ribbon popped right off

there is a flat surface with 50 holes that correspond to the 50 prongs on the ribbon connector

That's the CF connector.

You can use this Microdrive with the iPod mini.

so to connect it to the ipod mini, i plug in the ZIF connector from to native harddrive?

Just remove the old Microdrive from the mini, and keep the connector ribbon that was attached to it.
