the Volume REFORM , Some questions about it
« on: October 12, 2007, 01:07:01 PM »
hello everybody
i am asking so many questions in this subject because i was travelling for a long time and now there is so many changes suddenly

the volume feature as change to +6 ,0 ,-1...... - 40

what does it mean

1. is the "0" now the same as before in the sound volume aspect ?
2. is the "-40/mute" now equel to "-40" before the change or to the "-84"
3. what the +6 mean and why only till 6 ? is it higher volume then "0" in the old volume form

please try to be detailed

thanks good people

This changed 7th December 2005!

Very simply it is now in decibels relative to line level, which is 0.  The actual max and min depend on the player.  The old volume scale was an arbitrary split.  The actual min and max volume is unchanged and that is hardware dependent.

Which device are you running Rockbox on?  And which WPS are you using?

The volume range is different depending on your hardware.

On your player, can you go to +6? You shouldn't be able to on the actual player...

i didnt check yet because i use the older version of rockbox that now show me a range between 0 to -84

i download the new Simulator that now show +6 to -40
and im changing my WPS to match the new Form

i dont want to load the updated rockbox ver because i still didnt get answers

it looks strange to me that the range now is half then it was before
so im asking you guys , but it seems nobody feel this different except of me
and no one can answer me

Hi,

the volume range from -40 to 6 dB is only in the uisimulator.
On the player (H300) it is still -84 to 0 dB.

The iPod 5G goes from -40 to 6 as well.  I don't know enough about it to know why, but wouldn't be surprised if all simulators (and the original Archos devices) went from -40 to 6.

what do you mean by that?

i talk about the H300
and if the simulator of h300 doesnt act like H300
so it is not a simulator

i think i will install the last rockbox version and cheak it
and see what happened cause nobody gives me an answer

Plenty of people gave you an answer, you just seem to not believe them.

The simulator doesn't have the same volume range as the players it's simulating. This is a bug.

The simulator wasn't created specifically for WPS design, it was created to simulate the user interface. Part of this is so programmers can test things. It does plenty of good, so you don't need to rant. File a proper bug report.

This particular simulator bug should be fixed now. Volume range in the simulator is now the same as the simulated target.

This is nonsense. A simulator is still a simulator even if it doesn't simulate everything, and it's even impossible to simulate everything. And who said the simulator matches the player to 100%?

This was an issue that it WAS possible to simulate.
Thanks to Zivo for pointing out the issue, and safetydan for addressing it.
