Rockbox for me? Some questions

Spend some time reading HydrogenAudio.  You do not need lossless for highs that don't crack.

Well not quite THAT bad.  I got my E270 refurbished from woot.com and it's possible it did NOT come with a new battery.  With the backlight timer set to 15 secs or less and the wheel light off I'm getting at least 6hrs of actual listening time.  'Course I HAD to install the pacman roms and try that out, which eats up battery time!  
I'm going to get a Gigabeat F40 as a second player, I think this is one of the few units that actually have BETTER run time with rockbox than the OF! (Toshiba's firmware SUCKS).

Actually, all the non-PP units have better runtime than the OF, so I wouldn't say "few"...
