Removing Files and Making Playlists?
«
on:

I have a bunch of files that I don't want to listen to in Rockbox because they're Singing Lessons. I have them skipped on my Apple Firmware when in shuffle, but I can't make a playlist excluding these files because I don't know how to make a playlist and I don't know how to skip them.
Can someone help me out here?
Thanks

Here's the playlist section of the manual:
http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-ipodvideo/rockbox-buildch4.html#x7-610004.4
However, since you have an iPod with obfuscated iTunes generated filenames working with playlists on the player becomes a bit more troublesome. One option would be to make the playlist in iTunes and export it to an .xml playlist. There are a number of applications that will then allow you to convert this .xml playlist into a more standard .m3u (or .m3u8) playlist, which Rockbox supports.

I opened the iPod playlist I made in a new window. After this I went to file and then clicked on Export Library... From there I exported it to a remote location and after that I didn't know what to do.
I can't find the application you told me about either. I don't know how to convert it... I'll try to use the manual to put the playlist in Rockbox after that.

I get many hits if I search google for: convert itunes playlist m3u
And once you have the .m3u playlist you can simply drag-and-drop it onto your player.

Yeah, I tried one thing that was on ericdaughtry's website, but it didn't work... It was the second time I tried it... There was nothing on google for the keywords you provided which worked and I tried convert xml to m3u and even then I got nothing. I checked all of the websites and nothing helpful was there.
Can you give me a step by step because I'm not really understanding what exactly I have to do to get the playlist working... Is there some sort of alternative?

Well I tried it (the one at EricDaugherty.com) and it worked. I'm not willing to hold your hand and walk you through using unrelated software. That is also not the focus of these forums. I have pointed you in the right direction and verified for myself that a solution exists for Windows. I have also seen Applescripts that will do this job if you are on a Mac.

Then why did you reply? I don't even need a step by step walkthrough (holding my hand?), but you're really vague so I'll look to find my answer elsewhere.
Edit: I got it through YamiPod, it isn't showing up on the catalog of playlists though.

He replied to let you know that the tool definitely works, and it's an issue of "learning how to use it" rather than "finding a tool that works".

That's right, Llorean. I apologize if my post came off as overly rude. However, learning how to use 3rd party software is hardly the function of these forums. I provided a pathway to convert your iTunes playlists into Rockbox compatible .m3u(
playlists. The details of what program you use to perform that conversion are of little interest to me, nor do I have any special experience with such programs as I do not use iTunes to create playlists.

Okay, well I found out how to use Yamipod and I made the playlist through that which made it m3u right off the bat. I put it in the .rockbox directory and then the root yet it wasn't recognized by rockbox. I tried to select it through file and then save it but even then the playlist said it wasn't in the catalog.
Now that I got it to work, can you help me?
FYI. Thanks for clearing it up, but on most forums I've been to (even if it was specific to something) they guide you and give you a disclaimer if necessary. I'm sorry if I retaliated wrongly, but I think the learning process is best created when a path is set rather than just being pointed in a certain direction. It would be the same if I was asking for directions and you told me to head north. I might get lucky and find a sign, but if I don't then I'll keep heading north until I hit some body of water.

If we say "We live in the north, you can get to us by going this way and that way" sure.
If you say "Now how do I get from here to the grocery store" and we say "I don't know. There's one to the east somewhere I've heard of. Here's their phone number, ask them for directions" it doesn't make sense that you would then expect us to give you further instructions. You're coming from us, but it's their location, and they know how to get to it.
In this case, it's other people's software. These are the Rockbox forums, and it's just as inappropriate to expect us to walk you through, say, converting your CDs into MP3s, or moving files in Windows Explorer, etc.

Enough with that now... I really need to know how to make the m3u file work. Please?

The playlist catalog is a specific folder. If the manual doesn't describe where the playlist catalog saves files, we should probably fix this. You can also just browse to the .m3u file in the rockbox file browser and click on it.
