Vista and Rhapsody Windows Rockbox Install?
« on: October 08, 2007, 05:36:00 AM »
Using this guide:

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaE200RBootloaderPatching#Bootloader_Patching_in_Windows

With Windows Vista, this method results in the INF files not being recognized as anything that is compatable with the computer, but it should be, right?
Also, the Sansa gets recognized as an unknown device?

Help..?

Not really, Vista uses a different driver structure from XP - hence all the problems people are having with it around the world.

About what I'd expect if you're messing around with device drivers for the wrong OS version.

... which reminds of a text I read somewhere: "Do NOT perform these steps unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing (especially with drivers)"...

Hehe, I know what I'm doing, at least I know how to perform the steps.
I posted here to find a workaround, mabye.
Is there any?

I don't have a thumbdrive, and I don't think I'm going to buy one.
From what I've heard, you can't access the hard drive from Ubuntu or any Linux distribution, because the hard drive is formatted for Windows.

You don't need to download much for the install, a most a few meg, and the Ramdisk the livecds run up with has more than enough space to hold them.

This is plainly wrong. Also, what is "formatted for Windows"?

Yeah, Linux is definitely easier. It took me hours to figure out how to do it in Windows (I wrote the wiki article on Windows). I made the drivers in XP, so they won't work in Vista. Plus, libusb support on Vista is very poor (a quick search showed that the filter driver messes up people's USB ports on Vista).

This just in:
Okay, I tried it on XP, and same thing... But, after CORRECTLY booting into manufaturing mode, it worked lol.  Silly insturctions didn't say to use the hold switch, but I remembered it from my previous endevors on Sansa hacking :P

Sorry, fixed that in the wiki now (thanks for the heads up). Yes, if not done properly this has the potential to mess up your USB drivers and/or Sansa. Read the warning at the top of the wiki page.
Also, Downsizer, does this mean you have successfully put Rockbox on your e200R with Windows XP via my instructions? If so, that is a good sign, it means I wasn't the only one to get Rockbox with Windows, and it will help push us toward an easier Windows method.

When I (and  you) posted that, I didn't finish it yet.
I read your answer, and I posted this as soon as I finished.

I'm extremly pleased to tell you that it worked 100% correctly, even though there were a few hitches here and there, but I was fairly confident of my computer skills and much.
If you'd like, I can post what the "minor hitches" were.

I am extremly pleased with your work, and it wasn't that hard either, I think its basic enough to keep with those instructions.
