Sansa doesn't map as drive letter
(1/1)
jagdriver:
Using its original firmware set to MSC USB mode, my Sansa *does* map as a unique drive letter to my Win XP Pro PC. Not so with it set to MTP USB (the default as it comes out of the box).
In transferring the first batch of MP3s, the Sansa hung over and over, each time requiring a reformat. I even ran a MP3 integrity utility against the collection, weeding out those MP3s flagged as "corrupt" (yet they play fine on the PC, as well as on Creative Labs' devices).
"Enough of this," I said, and installed Rockbox with the Sansapatcher. The Sansa can dual-boot between firmwares, but with Rockbox running, the Sansa does *not* map as a drive letter when connected via USB. I even tried booting the Sansa firmware, changing to MTP, then rebooting to Rockbock. This didn't work, either.
So...I can't transfer MP3s to the Sansa in MSC mode using its firmware because of system hangs, and I can't transfer MP3s using Rockbox in either MTP or MSC mode.
What do you all advise, beyond the obvious "send the thing back to Amazon and let them deal with it." Thanks.
Llorean:
Rockbox doesn't have a USB mode yet. If you can't make the original firmware's USB mode work, you should probably send it back. It does suggest that something may be wrong with the player, and that's likely to affect your use of it with Rockbox too, later.
jagdriver:
Well, the original firmware does work in MSC USB mode, but NOT in MTP USB mode. Further, my understanding of the MTP even being available is that this is what Windows Media Player "Plays For Sure" uses. Yet WMP 11, the version aboard this PC that talks to my networked Yamaha A/V receiver, doesn't "see" the Sansa. Nor does it show up in Windows Explorer when set to MTP mode.
Once I switch it to MSC, both WinExplorer and (if memory serves) WMP 11 see it. Then the problem with the "corrupt" MP3s that hang the Sansa, yet play fine on the PC and my old Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox.
I hate to RMA this thing, but if I can't get the media onboard, what's the point, right?

MSC is the only way to get the device mapped as a drive letter.
