Are they the same size? Backdrops only work if the are the exact same dimensions as the screen.

I can't tell anything about the images from the post, but the bit depth must also be correct 132x80x16

Maybe that is different?

This is not true (pitily the information in the wiki is often enough misleading).

Usually bmps made on your computer have a bit depth of 24 which will be scaled down (and dithered if necessary) correctly to the internal bit depth of your target's display.

About the differences between the two bmps - hard to tell since you uploaded them as png. I once had a similar case where one bmp didn't show up and after a while I found out that this one was not a plain bmp but packed in a specific way (there seem to be different "internal" formats for bmp, same as compressed or uncompressed tiff). My suggestion is to try to save it again and pay attention what options are checked or not in the save dialogue, it must be a "plain" bmp.

Open your .cfg file as a text file. make sure where it says backdrops the bakdrop file is  in the right area E.I. /.rockbox/backdrops/"example".bmp .
So all together it should look like this:

wps: /.rockbox/wps/"example1".wps
backdrop: /.rockbox/backdrops/"example2".bmp
font: /.rockbox/fonts/"example3.fnt
foreground color: FFFFFF
background color: 000000.

Example1 is the wps name
Example2 is the backdrop name
Example3 is the font name

Sorry if I was no help. I cant really think of other things with my iPod left at school ::).

EDIT: oh, and don't forget to save it again as "file name".cfg
