HDD upgrade for H320 - wrap up
« on: October 06, 2007, 07:50:14 AM »
Hello everybody,

I've been trying to get an understanding of the HDD upgrade of an Iriver H320, but couldn't get a common view so far - maybe you can help me.

So, I would like to upgrade the 20GB HDD.

Which HDDs are supported by the player and by ROCKbox?

From what I read I would assume anything that's 5mm thin and 1,8" in size will do - so could I put some 60GB HDD in the player or are there even 80GB HDDs with 5mm heigth? Must it be Toshiba? I wouldn't think so...

Really appreciate your answers. Before I spend some money on the HDD I would like to understand if it has a chance to work.

Thanks a lot and cheers,
Thomas

Thanks, I've been reading this one. So I can attach an 80GB 5mm HDD to it, but need to transform ZIF 40 to 50 PIN, correct?

I recently upgraded my H320 with a 30Gig drive, all very easy.

Search for my recent posts for pointers into dissasembly instructions over on Mistic River.

30Gig drives are relatively easy to find, there is a 5mm/Single Platter 40Gig drive but I couldn't find any for sale.

Folks talk about taking out all the shock absorbing packing ang putting 8mm drives into H320s, but you'd have to research that yourself and make your own risk assesment.

I noticed while doing my upgrade that the 50pin right angle connector that the standard drives use is connected to the main board on a ZIF type connector(from memory mine was different to the one shown in the MR pictures) - I suppose that it is far too much to hope that this is the the same pin out as the current range of very high capacity drives... I like my H320 too much to go playing and having done a 50% capacity upgrade I don't think I'll be needing a bigger for a LONG time/

I agree, I love my H320 - already did a battery upgrade and it runs and runs and runs...pretty long, which is perfect for a lot of travelling. But 20GB are just too less HD capacity and 30GB would...well...improve it, but not make it perfect. So I'll try to get one of these 40GB HDs.

60GB would be perfect, but couldn't find one and the connector thing might also be a hurdle.

Not wishing to get into a codec wars thred but I have most of my music in ogg with quality 3 (I started at 5 but was planning a big Replay Gain and re-tagging exercise and my HDD was already filling up so went for 3) but I have to say that I recently listened to some stuff ripped at q0 and for blocking our background noise in an open plan office it was fine - I may not be so happy if I connected up to a decent Amp, but they are significantly smaller...
