Trouble understanding the manual regarding rockboy
« on: October 05, 2007, 07:51:24 PM »
Hello.  From the manual, I understand that rockboy is not a program you can just run with the appropriate files in place.  However, I have a bunch of roms and I have no clue where to put them.  The manual doesn't specify this and neither does anything I can find online.  I have the roms, I merely don't know where to put them, and how to bring them up and running on my ipod 5g.  Please help.

It's a viewer.  Read this section:

8.3.  Viewers

while I appreciate the help, that merely restated what I had said.  While I understand that it is a viewer as you said, the manual is a bit light on the topic of where to put the .gb and the .gbc files (do I put them in the games folder for example?)  how do I access them from the menu? through the playlists? It really doesn't outright answer those questions in the manual.  Other than that the manual has been helpful.  I appreciate any help you can give. ???

Viewers are plugins which are associated with specific file extensions. They cannot be run directly but are started by “playing” the associated file.

Rockboy is a Nintendo Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulator for Rockbox based on the gnuboy emulator. To start a game open a ROM file saved as .gb or .gbc in the file browser.

It doesn't matter where they are located.  Is there something unclear about the above phrasing?  We can improve it if it's somehow ambiguous.

Actually, I think the Default Keys section on Rockboy needs fixing. It currently only says:

KeyAction
SelectStart
Hold SelectOpen Rockboy menu

First off, it's missing most of the keys. Secondly, "Hold Select" does not go into the Rockboy menu, Flicking the "Hold" switch on is the proper way to do that - that took me 2 weeks to figure out :-[

I guess maybe I am unclear as to where I am opening the .gb or .gbc file from.  I might just be confused when I did the pacman install I had to create a folder named pacman.  I am wondering where I need to store the roms on the ipod.  Do i drag them into a random folder? do I put them right inside the .rockbox folder, or do i create a new folder? and then the manual says to find the .gb from the file browser, but doesn't specify how.  I have tried multiple locations and different attempts to access my .gbc files but to no avail.  In answer to your question, yes that quote from the manual is a bit confusing for me as I am not super familiar with this sort of stuff as of yet and it doesn't answer the main questions I am asking.  I really would just like to know where to store the files, and how to access them via the ipod.  If there is no answer to that, and I'm just a dumby, then I apologize.

It doesn't matter.  They can be anywhere.

Ok so, I take the .gb files and i just drag them anywhere in the /.rockbox folder.... then how do i access them?  Again this is another point that was unclear in the manual.  Thank you very much for your help.

You can put them anywhere on the player, but the .rockbox folder is probably the worst choice, since it is hidden with the default settings in the file browser.

You don't put the music in the .rockbox folder, do you?

It's just like viewing an image.  Navigate to it (using the file browser) and select it.  All viewers work the same in this respect and none of them care about where the file is stored.

If you don't know how to access the file browser then I have to assume that you didn't read the manual very carefullly:

You can select whether to browse using the File Browser or the Database Browser by selecting either Files or Database in the Main Menu. If you choose the File Browser, the Show Files setting lets you select what types of files you wish to view. See section 7.3 for more information on the Show Files setting.

I said that they can be anywhere.  They do not need to be in the .rockbox folder, and since the .rockbox folder is hidden, you would be better off putting them elsewhere.

alright I'll try that.  I might have just been using uncompatible roms.  I put all the .gb final fantasy ones in the /ipod folder and couldn't find them.  I also had trouble locating the "file browser" portion of the manual.  If you can direct me to that that is all I need.   Thank you guys very much you are awesome.

Search the forums. This question has been answered quite a few times in the past already.

For the file browser, just select "Files" from the root menu. That's the file browser.
