can't find my music files

(1/1)

scharkalvin:
After installing rockbox I connected to my computer with the OF and then
tried to add mp3 files.  I created a new directory under /music and put all my mp3 files into this directory.  After starting rockbox the only things I see in the files menu are
PHOTO, RECORD, tmp, VIDEO, and VERSION.

I selected database and let it build a database.  Only 4 files showed up because I didn't have any tags in most of them (but I can see lots of 'untagged' files when I select all tracks.  Why can't I see the files under FILES?

BTW the OF does show all the files.

Oh I'm using rockbox version 20070930

scharkalvin:
This may be a RTFM.
I fooled around with the files settings and now I can see all my files.
But I'm going to have to edit my files to add tags and then reload them
to the Sansa.

bascule:
The Sansa OF sets the /MUSIC folder to be a hidden folder, so it can't be seen (in Rockbox) unless you set the File View setting to 'All'.

If I were you, I would drag your music to a brand new folder. It always makes me nervous using one of the OF's 'standard' folders for anything.

What if a future OF update decides to remove all non-supported files (such as .ogg) from 'it's' directory; you would lose all your music.

scharkalvin:
Good idea.
I thought that rockbox was looking in the music folder on down, I didn't know
it started the database search from the top of the file tree.
I'll move my music to their own folders in the main directory.
Guess I'll create an MP3 folder and an OGG folder.
Oh I guess rockbox knows about ogg tags as well as mp3 tags.
(are there tags in mp4 files?)

Rincewind:
rockbox knows about mp4 tags as well.
You don't have to sort your files by file type in directories, rockbox handles tags and files transparantly, if you turn file extensions off then you won't see a difference between them at all.
