Yes. And shortly after you may cause permanent damage to your player.

Existing emulators should simply be optimized further if they aren't running well enough, and the generation gaps are big enough that it's unlikely overclocking will allow any device to run something that wouldn't run without it, only gain a few FPS here and there at best.

Would it cause it to overheat? Would underclocking allow the battery to last longer?

Yes, it could cause it to overheat.

Running the processor at lower speeds is already performed by Rockbox to preserve battery runtime.

DavidRawson:
It would have the same effects as a computer then, exploding the processor and sending bits of shrapnel everywhere, just like mine without the cooling fan, and being overclocked. Would my player possibly do that? :P
