Database Error w/Toshiba GB F40
« on: September 29, 2007, 12:50:03 PM »
Hey guys,

I've just installed Rockbox on my GB and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed by this OpenSource software!

But the thing is, when I select "Database" to go listen to some music, I can't get past the scanning part, when it reaches 9381 songs found it just stays there....

Any help ASAP would be very appreciated, I'm leaving on a trip around 6-7pm...

I would guess that one of your file's has an ID3 tag that's causing the metadata parser to choke.  Try removing half of the files and see if it rebuilds properly.  If it does add half of the removed files back.  You can keep halving it in this way until you find the culprit (if this is indeed the cause).

Wait, you mean I'd have to take off half of all the music I've got!?  :o

This is such a bummer... I really like Rockbox but I ain't sur I'm ready to remove 4000+ files....  :-[

Also, why won't my Gigabeat Room Playlists show up in Rockbox??

Rockbox is a REPLACEMENT firmware. It doesn't necessarily use proprietary and restricted formats and files that the original firmware does.

First off, it uses a standard playlist format, M3U supported by many things

Secondly, if you used Gigabeat Room to sync your music, they've been converted to the encrypted .SAT filetype: Rockbox can't play this. In fact no other program can play these files. Copy actual MP3 files to the device, by drag and drop or some program that doesn't convert them, rather than using Gigabeat Room, and you'll be fine.

Sorry for being such a noob... I'm really new to this stuff...

So basically I no longer need to use gigabeat room correct?!  (Hurray! What a terrible program)  I'd just need to drag and drop my files into the correct folders right? If this is the case, that means I have to remove all the .SAT files so I can make space for the MP3 ones?

By standard playlist format, what exactly do you mean? Like I'd make a playlist with Winamp or WMP and transfer it?

And by the way, thanks for the quick answers, I really appreciate it!

Yes, you can just wipe all the .sat files off it, then put folders with your music on it however you like. No more Gigabeat Room.

Rockbox can play them straight from the folders, or build a database for searching, once you've done this.

As for the playlists, yes, Winamp can make them. Rockbox can make them. Foobar2000 can make them. WMP *might* be able to, I've never checked. But the majority of programs can make M3U or M3U8 playlists, it's the most common format out there, pretty much.
