Error installing on first generation iPod - Unknown version number in firmware
(1/1)
lean:
Dear all, I am attempting to install rockbox on a first generation 10GB iPod. I have converted successfully to FAT32 and have installed the software in the .rockbox directory. When I try to run ipodpatcher I get the following error:
paul@tambo:~/software/rockbox$ sudo ./ipodpatcher /dev/sdb

I have never upgraded the firmware ever in the last 5 years.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

yapper:
What firmware version do you have installed?
Settings>About>Version should show it.
I've successfully installed on a 20G 2nd gen iPod which has Apple firmware 1.5
linuxstb:
ipodpatcher won't work with the _very_ first versions of Apple's firmware on the 1st gen - you could either try and fix it (the firmware format is documented at http://ipodlinux.org/Firmware ) or upgrade your Apple's firmware.
I see you're on Linux, so if you don't have access to itunes, you can follow the instructions here:
http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodManualRestore
(just do steps 2-4 - the firmware upgrade process).
lean:
My firmware version was 1.1
I followed steps 2-4 of the manual restore process to upgrade to firmware 1.5. After that ipodpatcher worked fine and I know have rockbox installed. (I seem to have a battery problem now, but thats a different issue.)
Many thanks for the help.
Lean.
