h120 won't start up...?
« on: September 26, 2007, 09:52:35 AM »
Hello

I have been offered a h120 with this error description:

"The player doesn't turn on anymore. There is no difference using an ac-adapter or not. When I plug in the ac the green LED turns on, but not the player".

If anyone here can tell me, that this probably - or - certainly is e.g. the harddrive, I would go for it and mount a new harddrive.

If I am told: Motherboard or can't be repaired, I wouldn't buy it.

Thanks in advance

This could be one of several problems. It could mean:

1) The battery may be dead and needs to be replaced.

2) The hard drive is bad.

3) There could be a problem with the firmware in ROM, meaning a rather lengthy recovery process.

If this someone you know and see person to person, I'd ask to try the H120 out first. If this is online, then forget it and move on to the next one. There's no sense in buying something online in this shape that you can not see personally, only to get a lemon.

I don't think it could be (1) -- as the error desctiption says it also doesn't turn on with AC connected, and it's not an Ipod. I'd rather think it could be another cause:
(4) the power button is broken and can't turn on the player. You could try if using the hard reset (the hole in the bottom) is able turning on the player.

(1) was speculation, but yes, you're right, bluebrother. Even with no battery installed, a DAP should be able to turn on when connected an AC adapter... and I should've realized that since my Dell DJ's battery is now broken and I can only run it using AC power.

If it is indeed (4), is it easy to repair that kind of damage? I'm only asking because I want to be prepared for any kind of emergency of the sort.

Thanks for replies.

Well it's an online offer, so I want to be pretty shure about the possibilities for a repair.

If it is (4) I don't think a repair is easy, though I have never tried.

Did you buy it? Did you figure it out how to repair it? I'm asking as my h140 has given up on me with the same symptoms...

Thanks
Em.

No. I didn't buy it, so I can't help you  :-[

Good luck anyway.
