Convert ipod playlists to .m3u
« on: August 12, 2007, 12:37:15 AM »
Greetings!

I just started using rockbox (it is worth the trouble trust me!)  The biggest problem i had was converting my playlists so I decided to throw this out there for anyone to use.  To the best of my knowledge there is no way to convert the smart playlists to be used in rockbox.  However the regular playlists can be ported over using Yamipod.  The instructions are as follows.

1.  Download Yamipod
2.  If you have any Smart playlists on your ipod that you would like to play with rockbox create a normal (not smart) playlist with the same name.  Then (ctrl a) select all of the songs from the smart playlist and drop them in to the normal playlist.  once you have all of your smart playlists converted close itunes and open Yamipod.

3.  a)  In the drop down menus on Yamipod there is a Playlist drop down.  Drop this down and select Export.  **On the advanced tab make sure that the .m3u format is selected otherwise rockbox won't read the playlist!!**
b)  on the first tab select the playlists you wish to convert.
c)  One of the boxes asks where your music is located ON YOUR IPOD.  the directory for this should be your ipod drive (mine is F:) then ipod control/Music (if you can't see this it is hidden and you need to be able to View Hidden Folders and files [Google it].  So MY directory is F:\ipod_control\Music.
d)  Then select where to save the file.  In order for rockbox to read the playlist create a playlist folder in your root directory on your ipod.  (F:\playlists)

4.  Wait.  it took about 30 mins for Yamipod to finish converting but once it did the playlists worked fine.  One thing i will mention is that it displays the songs like they are saved on the ipod.  if anyone knows a way around this without jacking up the itunes playlists please let me know.

Disclaimer-  I googled the heck out of different ways to convert ipod to .m3u so if anyone has posted this before me on any other site I didn't copy you i just took what i read from about 15 or so different article and compiled this.  A BIG thanks goes out to all the people that have worked on rockbox  THANK YOU ALL.

It is a wiki.  You're welcome to change it yourself.

I love RockBox, thanks!! Also, there is a file available in this thread at this post for converting smartplaylists into .m3u8. It worked great for me!!

By the way, you guys would rather directions for a separate software be put into the wiki for RockBox rather than discussed in the forums? Or is this just the wrong forum for it?

The forums are for two-way discussion/interaction.  The wiki is for one-way communication of information -- e.g. documentation, tutorials, or links to resources.   :)

Well said.  So well said, in fact, that I've added it this statement to our posting guidelines.
