You guys rock!

Dear RockBox creators/programmers/technical gurus everywhere,

It's the most amazing thing when you watch something happen that you had previously thought to be impossible. I wanted a video player for as long as I can remember, but only had a 1GB 1st Gen iPod Nano that I got a while back. I couldn't understand why Apple hadn't put on video support, if it could display pictures, I reasoned, it could play videos (excuse my oversimplied technical ignorrance). Finally a few days ago I went online to search for something that could possibly let me play videos. Finally I came upon this site, and downloaded Rockbox onto my iPod. Then I got excited after reading about the .mpg video player plugin. And after downloading VLC and following all the instructions I got a video on my iPod. I hit 'PLAY' and was instantly blown away. There I was watching a video, formatted perfectly, on my iPod nano. I don't mind the small screen size, and was amazed at the audio quality. So here's to you Rockbox community, for making my day. I look forward to utilizing this feature in the months to come. Thanks for making see the impossible!

Best Regards,
Josh Moskowitz.

One more thing, what I could not find here:http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodRuntime#Results was a battery life for video playback. Does one exist, or should I make one?

P.S Hope this post belongs in this forum.

If you want to test the battery life vor videoplayback you are welcome to test and post you result.
Simply use the "battery_benck" plugin and play a huge video file that's long enough unil your player shuts down automatically :)

I think I will do that. Unfortunately I have that problem which after some searching seems common among 1g Nano Rockbox users. In that after only a few hours of use, the battery is completely dead. Does Rockbox use a ridiculous amount of battery life? Or as I read, is this really an Apple firmware glitch? Or even perhaps the result of watching a long movie, which could drain the battery at a much higher than expected rate. I'll give it a day or two to fully charge as recommended, and then do a battery life test.

One more thing I noted, in the Rockbox settings you can can actually change the capacity of the iPod battery (in mA). Is this safe at all? It doesn't seem like a good idea to play around with the amount...

First: Rockbox does tend to burn more battery than the iPod firmware because (obviously) Rockbox devs cannot optimise for the hardware the way Apple can, not knowing everything about it.

Second: The battery life setting does not change how the battery works, it simply changes the battery information reported to rockbox for more accurate estimates of remaining battery life.
