can't seem to start rockbox

i have a 4g 20gb ipod with rockbox installed and i can't get it to startup.  it says to hold menu/select and it just won't turn on.  the only way i can get it to turn on is to plug it into the usb cable.  any help?  i tried searching but no luck.

Is the hold switch on?

nope.  i read to turn the hold on and then off and then try menu+select and get nothing.  this is making me mad because this is the only reason i don't use rockbox and i want to use it!

Febs:
What happens if you simply press the Select button?  Does it turn on?

And what happens when you insert the USB cable?

deadbat:
doesnt turn on with select button.

and it will start when i plug the usb cable into it.
