I think you've misread what pondlife said - the way I read it, he's saying 0.3s is how long it is *now*.

Oh, I can see that now. Weird!

But it definitely isn't 0.3s on my iPod Nano 1st gen, or am I hallucinating? It's taking more like 1.0+ seconds, I'd say.

Did pondlife calculate it wrongly or might the same code give different fade lengths on different hardware?

It depends on the length of the hardware tick, which he did question in his post too.

Yes, well the fade sure is longer than 0.3 seconds (see edit below) on my device, which makes me deduce that it's hardware dependent. We're back to square one, really. ;)

Rephrased question:

Can the fade time be programmed to an absolute time of 0.3 seconds - independently of underlying hardware?  (Making the feature useful and consistent on all Rockbox devices; old as well as new.)

Edit: I clocked the fades on my iPod, the fade down seems to be around 1.5 seconds and the fade up around 2.5 seconds.

Does that seem to be the same on other devices?

A lot of people seemed to think a very short fade in & out was a good idea, finally making the feature worth turning on.

Do you still like the concept?

My two cents: A 92kbps MP3 fades a good deal faster than a 256kbps MP3. 32kbps is faster still.

Good insight, I never noticed that before! The difference isn't huge on my 1st gen Nano (running r18083) but it sure is there.

The resume playback-fade is constantly longer than the pause-fade, but there's a noticable difference between the two when comparing a 320 kbps file to a 56 kbps one. To me, the difference in the pause-fade is less noticable.

*sigh* I suppose the code for consistent fading across files & platforms is pretty complex... :(

The difference is (I assume) a fair bit more noticeable on my target, a Sansa c250. If I'm not mistaken, it runs at 30MHz normally, and 80MHz when boosted. I haven't spotted a difference between fade-to-pause and fade-from-pause, but hey. :)

Also, I have to ask myself why I listen to 32kbps MP3s any more. ;)
