PC Music players can't find music on Sandisk
« on: September 19, 2007, 02:04:39 PM »
When I connect the Sandisk to the computer, no music player on the computer finds any music on the computer.    Is this normal?

There seems to be two folders--one in the root directory and another in the system directory.  Rockbox has no problems finding and playing the music.  But, in which directory should the music be stored?

Thanks,

Ray

First of all, don't you mean no music player finds and music on your SanDisk Sansa?  You put 'on the computer'.  So if it isn't finding music on your computer, that would be unrelated to RockBox.

Also, I'm not 100% sure what you are trying to ask because you say RockBox has no problems finding and playing the music.  If you boot your player with the default firmware, does that play your music too?

The music on a SanDisk Sansa should simply be in a 'MUSIC' folder that is located in the root of the player.  If you can open up 'My Computer' and then look under 'Devices with removable storage', you should see your SanDisk Sansa.  If you open that up, you won't see the folder(because the player will be in 'MSC'(Rhapsody if you have an R) mode and that folder is hidden), but if you have the 'Address Bar' enabled in Windows Explorer, you can type 'MUSIC\' up in the address bar(adding it to the drive letter of your SanDisk Sansa) and it should open up the folder.

Some music players on PCs may have to be configured to read and write music to and from that folder.  Those instructions are going to be different for each player, but if you ask, you should get an answer.

The music players on the computer (Winamp, WMP, Rhapsody, etc.) do not find the music on the Sansa.   The music is located in the "MUSIC" folder in the root of the Sansa.

I can see the music on the Sansa from Explorer.   The music players must be looking somewhere different.

Any ideas for a solution?

No -- the DAP is simply an external hard drive to the PC so there is nothing to look at. This is different to MTP mode where the player recognizes itself as a dedicated music device (and brings some features like "direct" access to the music database or similar).

Open the files using explorer or the open dialog of your player application.

The Sansa OF hides the music folder.  Turn on show hidden files in explorer.

P.S. This isn't at installation question

As  I said, I can find the music via explorer.  The music players (winamp, WMP, etc.) can't find the player.

Is that normal?

When I attach the Sansa to the computer, two different drives appears for teh Sansa (J: & K:).  Is this normal?

Thanks

Please understand that this just has absolutely nothing to do with Rockbox.  When your Sansa is connected to the computer via USB, it is acting as any other hard drive or storage device.  You should refer to the documentation or support channels for winamp, WMP, or whatever media player you may be using to learn how to access music from a mass storage device.  There is probably an easy way to have those media players search your storage device for supported files, but since Rockbox is not even running on your player while it is connected via USB, this really just doesn't relate to Rockbox at all.

Yes.  One of the drives is the internal memory of your Sansa.  The other is the Micro SD card.
