iRiver H3xx Bootloader.. again...
« on: September 15, 2007, 04:16:23 PM »
Tried to search the forum for an answer, but couldn't find a good one...

Anyone knows when Linus will finish the H3xx bootloader?
I am using the iRiver in my car with a car adapter, so it always starts up with iRiver firmware.

I have noticed that Linus hasn't been that active with commits the last 6 months, and I guess that he has his reasons for not being that active...

I have kinda been waiting for a very long time for this bootloader, and I'm starting to lose hope I will ever see my H340 boot into RockBox when I start the car...

We don't estimate ETAs, and that's really all there is to it, Linus probably don't know if/when he will work on that bootloader or how long it will take until it is "finished" so no one else could know either.

Wouldn't it be possible to publish a new bootloader even if not everything at the todo list in the wiki page http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IriverBoot has been fixed or finished?
PLEASE!!! :)

I don't want to grouch, but it's been more than a year ago since the last bootloader has been published and I assume that a new one build on base of the current SVN code is better than the current official published one...

with regards,
Matthias

Of course it is possible to publish anything, you can even build one yourself but would you test it on your player with the risk of it being bricked? Linus has the necessary hardware to reflash an h300 directly even if it has been flashed with a non working image and that is pretty much needed when developing and testing a bootloader on those devices.

I believe that the SVN bootloader right now doesn't actually boot, so there's some work that needs to be done. At least, I recall someone saying that it doesn't.

But does anyone know if Linus is actually working on a new bootloader?

I don't want to blame or put unnecessary pressure on him though...
Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate and admire the work all you developers have done with RockBox.
It is just something I have been waiting for a long time...

Guess  I'll just have to be even more patient... :-)

I'm able to build a bootloader myself.
But of course I don't want to risk my player being bricked - so when I talked about "publishing anything" I meant a version which at least is known to work.

Is Linus the only one who
  a) has neceessary hardware to reflash a bricked h300?
  b) is able to work on the bootloader stuff (and fix things which make it unbootable)?

If both questions will be answered with "yes" I also guess we'll have to wait a bit longer ;)

It would be nice to have a statement from Linus himself to clarify this, maybe.

I'm locking this thread.  Linus can post here if he choose to, and otherwise, there is nothing to be said and no reason for the thread to be bumped.
