ipod mini problems

No. You need to make sure hold is disabled before pressing Menu + Select, and remember that you need to hold those buttons for a long time -- something up to 30 seconds or so is possible.

I held it for about two minutes and all that happened is the battery charger icon disappeared and reappeared.

So it actually rebooted? If the Ipod shows the empty battery symbol even after reset the battery is really flat. And if you charged it for quite a while before it looks like your battery is broken.
I guess you already ensured that when charging the battery the usb port you used was working, or better used a wall charger?

I don't think it rebooted, the apple symbol didn't come up at all it went strait to the the battery charging symbol. I did use my wife's usb cord as well to make sure it wasn't the cord. If it sounds like a battery and not anything else I'll probably order a batter replacement. Thank you for the help.

I ordered a replacement battery for $11.99. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.
