ipod mini problems
« on: September 14, 2007, 08:11:58 PM »
I have a 2nd generation ipod mini.  I have rockbox, ipodlinux, and apple installed to triple boot.  This was working fine for a few weeks.  Yesterday the Ipod turned off while playing music.  I figured it the battery had run out.  When I got it home to charge there was no display coming on when it plugged it into my computer.  I run Ubuntu 7.04 and it did not recognize the ipod as a music player or a disk.  I booted into Windows and it does not recognize I have anything plugged into the usb port.  I have tried the reset process many times I do not hear the hard drive moving and nothing comes up on the display.  I have left it unplugged for 24 hours and plugged it in and still nothing.  If the battery had died wouldn't it work while it is plugged in?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you try leaving it plugged in for a longer time?  It may be in a deeply discharged state where it can't wake up immediately.

You may need to manually reset it (even if there is no display) -- there are known issues with Apples firmware when the battery is really flat preventing the Ipod from starting.

It has now been plugged in for sixteen hours.  I tried to restart it while it was plugged in and nothing happened.  I unplugged it and tried to restart the ipod and the battery charging icon came up on the display, but it is frozen the battery graphic does not move and fill to show that it is charging.

Are you talking about something other than flipping the hold toggle and holding menu and select to reset the ipod?

No. You need to make sure hold is disabled before pressing Menu + Select, and remember that you need to hold those buttons for a long time -- something up to 30 seconds or so is possible.

I held it for about two minutes and all that happened is the battery charger icon disappeared and reappeared.

So it actually rebooted? If the Ipod shows the empty battery symbol even after reset the battery is really flat. And if you charged it for quite a while before it looks like your battery is broken.

I guess you already ensured that when charging the battery the usb port you used was working, or better used a wall charger?

I don't think it rebooted, the apple symbol didn't come up at all it went strait to the the battery charging symbol.  I did use my wife's usb cord as well to make sure it wasn't the cord.  If it sounds like a battery and not anything else I'll probably order a batter replacement.  Thank you for the help.

I ordered a replacement battery for $11.99.  Hopefully that will take care of the problem.

You could have done what I call "resetting the battery". Rather than waiting a day or so, I simply open up my player, disconnect the battery connector, and reconnect it. Tada!

Except that won't work if the battery is dead and needs replacement.  But why bother to open your player rather than simply using the reset key combination?

Because, I've read on this forum that theres a battery glitch and it may need to be plugged into a wall charger for up to 24 hours. So rather than waiting, I take 20 seconds to disconnect and reconnect the battery.

I fix iPods, so I know what I'm doing hardware-wise.

It may need to be charged--but often it does not.  In all of the times that I have ever experienced this battery glitch, all that was needed was a simple reset.

And how should a short disconnect of the battery fix a flat battery? It can't magically charge out of a disconnect ...
