5g 30gb w/ apple drivers NOT WORKING
« on: September 13, 2007, 04:03:39 PM »
Hi All,
I have a 5g 30gb w/apple drivers and i installed RockBox from the instructions here:
http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-ipodvideo/rockbox-buildch2.html#x4-80002.2
after I did so, it came to a screen that looks like this:

Rockbos boot loader
Version: 1.1
IPOD version: 0xFFFFFFFF
TOSHIBA MK3008GAL
No partition found
Hold MENU+SELECT to reboot
then SELECT+PLAY for disk mode

Ok so I have tried rebooting a million times hoping that rockbox will appear but it will just reboot to that same screen.  I'm a major n00bzor with this so if anybody knows what i'm doing wrong please treat me like a two year old.  Thanks!

It means that you have to format your iPod as a FAT32 drive. Are you on a Mac, perchance?

Yup, I installed everything with my mac.  How do I change it to FAT32?

You can use Disk Utility, or do a search on Google for a good partition management tool for the Mac if Disk Utility doesn't work.

Ok, thank you! But should I uninstall Rockbox first, change it to FAT32, then reinstall Rockbox?  Or would it be ok to just leave it on there?

You'll have to reinstall the software itself when you format. It shouldn't affect the bootloader (as far as I know), but if it does, just reinstall the bootloader.

Once you're done, then you can install a few themes, the fonts pack, and some iconsets to make your iPod look nicer, but remember that there are themes that require a patched build, which will require you to ask for support in the "Unsupported Builds" section, under the respective build's thread.

Make your choices wisely, young one.

Ok, so in those instructions, when it says "NOTE you must replace "diskN" with the correct name of the disk..." what do u put in there?  I'm not quite sure.  And just to clarify, this is being entered into the terminal right?

Replace N with the correct number assigned to your iPod. If your iPod is assigned disk2, for example, then replace N with 2.

And yes, this is being entered in the terminal. Just type exactly what the page instructs you to type, and you should be fine.

You put in the disc name. ipodpatcher shows this, so you can just run ipodpatcher, watch the output and cancel installation. On linux this is usually something like "/dev/sda", on mac something like "/dev/disk2". You need to make sure to use the correct name as you otherwise might overwrite the boot sector of a different drive (thus most likely causing trouble with that drive).

Yes.
