Going back to original firmware: Windows format tool = safe?

First a bit of bg info:
I dont usually have windows xp, in fact I pretty much dont outside of school, and I dont even have computers class in school anymore so hey.
My iPods firmware died, and after ages of googling, I found rockbox, an alternative, open source firmware. This all worked grand, until I tried to update that and I can;t get the newer version working
Now I can use my dads laptop for a few days while he's away on business, so Im wondering, if I use windows to format the iPod, then when I can get the lappy use the iTunes 7.4 restore tool will it a) bring the iPod back to the original functioning firmware and b) fix the bootloader so that it loads the iPod firmware by default?

1.  It is not necessary to reformat to uninstall Rockbox.

2.  If you simply boot into the iPod firmware, it will continue to start in the iPod firmware unless you reset or let the iPod got into deep sleep.  You may find that it is not necessary to uninstall Rockbox at all.

3.  If you do decide to uninstall, you can just use ipodpatcher, the same way you did when you first installed RockBox, but use the (u) option instead of the (i) option.

Thanks for the quick response, however the iPod firmware is completely dead, it sees 0 audio tracks rather than about 900.
And I tired the bootloader but it didnt work, i try again later and hopefully that will do something.

This does not mean that "the iPod firmware is dead", it's just the ItunesDB that is corrupt. There are various tools around that can repair a broken ItunesDB, just search the forums / ask google.
