idea: video solution with rockbox+original firmware in ipod
« on: September 15, 2007, 08:07:11 PM »
I do not have windows and i don't want to use any comp program like ipod to put video in my ipod 5.5G so i have copied simple movie to ipod via itunes (on my friend's comp). Now if i want to watch some video i simple upload it to ipod via filemanager and in ipod i find out where is the original video file (f.e /iPod_Control/Music/F02/prdl.mp4) then i remove it or rename it and copy the wanted video into this folder an rename it to original-video's name.

so.. What about writing program for rockbox that would do all the work instead of me/you). f.e simply hold the middle button on video -> then select "Prepare for watching" and the program/plugin/appplicaton would move it to the right location and rename it and if you sellect next film it would move and rename the first movie back and then it would process the next movie (move, rename).

I think that this is good idea, but i'm not capable to do it (not enough knowledge) but if someone capable of that is reading this, please get inspired

I'm verrry sorry for my english

Why would we want Rockbox to do that?  I think you misunderstand the purpose of Rockbox...

I don't think a program such as you describe makes much sense.  You need to use a computer to transfer the video onto your iPod one way or the other, so it makes sense to do the conversion on the computer rather than on the player.  It would take a LOOOOONNNNNGGGG time to convert a video, considering that the iPod's processor runs a < 100 Mhz and your computer probably runs in the multiple GHz range.

I think what he means is simply replace the iTunes database entry's target.

Many videos are available pre-converted (podcasts, etc for example.)

The solution he suggests is to have iTunes sync exactly one movie over. Then you can drag and drop all the movies you want, and have Rockbox automatically swap any given movie so that it's where the iTunes database expects the one movie it knows is on the player to be.

That's actually a really cool idea.  As a person who's never used iTunes, but would to sync one movie and then use the original firmware to watch movies, I like it.

However, I don't need Rockbox to do it, it seems.  Just sync the one movie, find where it is, and then manually copy the files over.  Can't do it "on the run" easily, but hey.

One possibility that would be a more general solution could be a "Paste Over" option in the file quick menu.  You could select your video, "Cut" it, navigate to the video folder, highlight the correct video, and "Paste Over" it so the new video is pasted with the same name (Deleting the original).  Probably should have a confirmation screen.

Okay, programmers, get it done.  I'm going to go have some coffee. ;)

Exactly, exactly, exactly.

When I went for a school trip to England, I had converted 20 movies to ipod format and copied them to ipod.
I used no iTunes but i was still able to watch them all. But it was very tiring to rename and move the movies each time.

Well, as always, you are free to make a patch, but making things simpler to use on the original firmware is not one of Rockbox's goals...to say nothing on just one device's firmware.
