Quake on iPod.

<< < (4/5) > >>

Llorean:
I ran Quake 1 on a 486/66DX2. I'll wager that a dedicated enough programmer could wrangle it into running on the iPods at a playable (if not enjoyable) frame rate. If you're taking the requirements from the Wikipedia article, those are the "Recommended" specs, rather than the minimum. The official requirements simply list "Pentium Processor" without any given speed. But either way, it'd be nice to see someone try it just so we can finally put up a flag saying "There, it's been proved to be impossible" or "There, this is the upper limit"

axlgreasetires:
yeah, for sure.  I would be satisfyed by just seeing the game load no matter what state the frames per seconds are.  Lloreans keymappage is decent(may be a bit tough to get used to).  There's got to be some good coder out there looking for something to do.  I really need to learn C.

LambdaCalculus:
I'm kind of full up with still trying to start writing an NES plugin. Coding in C when you're still learning is akin to learning how to swim by being thrown into the ocean.

axlgreasetires, there are plenty of good C books out there to help get you started. Might I suggest heading to O'Reilly Media and seeing what they have to offer?

How about PocketQuake?

I used to run this on a fixed-point iPaq 38xx series PocketPC (206 MHz Intel StrongARM SA-1110 32-bit RISC Processor) and it worked really quite well considering the low FPS and limited keys...

EDIT: Just been browsing their forums. Looks like it's running on the fixed-point PocketPCs using some sort of floating-point emulator, but that some efforts are underway to convert all (or part) of the code to native fixed-point.

Rockbox is only developed by people on their spare time, if and when they feel like it. If you want something you better do it yourself as RB devs do not work on requests.

 ;D

(sorry, couldn't resist)
