original firmware on nano with hold

The hold button on my ipod nano is broken, so i can't put it on hold.  Before I install Rockbox on my nano, is there a way to boot the original firmware without using the hold?  Perhaps some different key combo?  Or should I be looking at ipod linux instead?

Press and hold the Menu button immediately after turning the player on.  You'll need to do this quickly--if you do it too late, Rockbox will load but having the Menu button held will cause Rockbox to clear your settings.
