.wps stands for "While Playing Screen." This is literal: It changes the screen you see while playing.

What can you do to make the recorder screen look less primitive?

Nothing unless you're a programmer.

Ok. Will anybody be working on a cusomizable system? You could add a feature or something, like wps, only for recorder or whatever else. I'll go to the feature request.
