I could almost use my sansa to listen to quiet conversations, with the gain high. Can you make it any higher than the current limit?

The limits are based on the hardware. You could apply digital gain in post-processing, but that wouldn't allow you to pick up any sound, it'd just be like turning up the volume on the file after you'd already recorded it.

The limits are based on the hardware.
The Rhapsody recorder had no user changable gain. Does that mean it automatically sets the gain? That's one thing rockbox is good for....

We have no way of knowing what the original firmware does.

Don't you have tools to disassemble it? How do you know how the sansa works then? How do you know how to configure software for sansa? Are all mp3 players similar?

1) Yes, but we don't use them unless it's a last resort and haven't done so here due to datasheets for the DAC.
2) It's similar enough to iPods and the H10, that between those similarities and our datasheets, a lot was already covered, enough to begin investigating directly with the hardware.
3) A wide variety of methods.
4) No. Not even close.

How do you look at the structure of the circutry within the microchips, and then figure out how to make rockbox work with it?
