Updated: rockbox nano 4gb 1st gen database problem
« on: September 08, 2007, 07:48:43 PM »
s/n ym630p40tk2
model ma107hk
format windows

I have tried the last 2 build and am not able to get rockbox to work.build 14630 and build 14638.
Here is the background, installed build 14630, go to initialize database and it finds the correct number of songs. upon reboot when trying to commit to database it locked up at database 2 of 9. Upon a reboot the database still wanted to be initialized yet it found nothing. Did a full restore added music now using media monkey (very nice). this time rockbox found more songs then on the nano, got to database 5 of 9 and locked up. Upon reboot i had a black screen of death telling me to reboot and go to disk mode.
Next i tried 14638, upon initializing the database it still found more songs then were on the nano. Upon reboot i was able to get through all 9 of 9 database commits. however the database still wanted to be initialized. Upon reboot black screen of death telling me to go to disk mode.

on the black screen of death it tells me it can not find rockbox.ipod

I hope this info is helpful.

i have rockbox on my 80gig and it is great. I am just struggling with this nano.

Anyone have this problem or any ideas.

When you connect the iPod to a computer does the rockbox.ipod file still exist at the correct location?  It almost sounds like you're experiencing some kind of filesystem problems -- in which case it might be a good idea to run chkdsk or equivalent disk utility.

Also, if you don't try to build the database does everything work properly?

going on holiday, will try the checkdisk over next weekend. Yes everything works properly until i try to set up the database. Ipod is daughters so i will not be able to check for the rockbox.ipod file until the weekend either.

Hi jpphun,

I have almost exactly the same issue with my own 1st gen ipod nano 4Gb.  I just tried to install rockbox for the first time and the database creation does not seem to work for me.

Having tried to intialise the database the player asks me to reboot it.  So I pressed menu+select and upon rebooting rockbox show "committing database x/9" where the value of x varies between reboots. The player still reaches the main menu after this though. Each time when I go to database in the main menu, rockbox tells me the database is not ready and needs to be initialised.

I will also try and run chkdsk on my player and report the results.

Best regards and thanks,

Alastair

Having tried to intialise the database the player asks me to reboot it.  So I pressed menu+select and upon rebooting rockbox show

Note - Rockbox asks you to restart it, not perform a hard reset.

You should shutdown the ipod cleanly, otherwise you risk corrupting files that have not been commited. This *may* explain your issue.

Hi GodEater,

Thanks for pointing out my obvious mistake!  There were some filesystem problems, I ran chkdsk, removed rockbox and reinstalled in the current build.

However unforunately I still have the same issues.  Upon restarting, properly this time, it got right through to 9/9 of commiting the database.  However when I went into database from the main menu, it says that the database is not ready, just like it did the first time.

Any ideas on what to try next?

Best regards and thanks,

Alastair

Probably a silly question, but did you run "chkdsk /F"?

chkdsk /F /V /R

Is there any point in reformatting the ipod and trying again?  Maybe an older rockbox build?  Any debugging info I could dig up?

I have seen people with problematic files before that cause the metadata parser to choke.  You might try removing all but a couple of files and see if the database will build properly with those.

When i run chkdsk /E a window pops up but then closes again, i see no data, running xp. I figured this out. i ran the error checkign option and the computer did somethign for about 5 minutes then closed so i assume everything is OK, there was no log file that i could see.

rockbox.ipod is not present, so i will reinstall.

I was trying to use Izarc to unzip but it would not create the .rockbox, so i used windows to unzip. As a different try i deleted everything in .rockbox and then unzipped using Izarc.
When initializing the database i found more thne the 473 songs, kept counting to 800 then jumped to 1197. i did the soft restart pressing and holding the play/pause, it started to commit database at 3/9 "Panic Dir entry 0 in sector 3 is not free! 01 64 00 61.

Upon a reboot it committed database up to 9/9 and then went to the main menu, still wants to initialize the database.
When looking at the files they all seem to be there.

What should my next step be. Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with my nano. We need to find older builds but the oldest one on this site still doesn't work properly. I found a test build that was offered but the music plays and switches songs uncontrolably. Eh, can't be good. I also have an 80gig and it is working beautifully, but my nano...  :-[

If anyone can find older builds that work, that would be great...  :-\

You need to run it from the command prompt.  Click the "Start" button, "Run ..." and then type "cmd."

ran chkdsk /F, allowed this to be scheduled at the next restart and everything is working fine now.

Thanks for the help.

I thought everything was fine. I was able to change themes see all the music in the database. however when i went to play a song i got a fatal error and had to reboot. Now it wants to reinitialize the database.

should i do the chkdsk, then restore, then reinstall rockbox to see what happens?
