Getting Rockbox to Run on Sansa e200r
DavidGWRawson:
the beginning of the drive, where the music, system, etc folders are. i didn't mean directory, i meant that it's at ....i dont know how to say it..... i copied it directly to the device. and yes, it said that it couldnt find rockbox.e200, sorry for the mistake. what do i do if it says that? do I reformat my device?
DavidGWRawson:
OK, here is what I did!!! I formatted my player, allowed it to replace default files and folders, re-attached it, put .rockbox on it, copied .rockbox and renamed it rockbox.e200, now it runs! So I did have to rename .rockbox folder to rockbox.e200! Thank you all! (this thread looks as though it contains everything on installing rockbox on e200r! it could be useful for other people!!) Now, however, I no longer need to be on the Installation/removal forum. Time to go on other forums...
pixelma:
No! You don't have to rename the .rockbox folder! Please don't give such wrong advice openly here, it could get people into trouble!
The installation instructions clearly state that
--- Quote ---... the entire contents of the .zip file should be extracted directly to the root of your player’s drive. Do not try to create a separate directory or folder on your player for the Rockbox files! The .zip file already contains the internal directory structure that Rockbox needs.
Note: If the contents of the .zip file are extracted correctly, you will have a folder called /.rockbox, which contains all the files needed by Rockbox, in the main folder of your player’s drive.
--- End quote ---
There are no additional steps of renaming something mentioned because you shouldn't (I'm surprised that it works for you at all). This can really cause you trouble and to the least major, unnecessary inconvenience when upgrading.

*rambles about Firefox showing four misspelled words (excluding "Rockbox", "im", "didnt", "DavidGWRawson", and "pixelma")*

That directory isn't supposed to be modified. Of course it only boots from there - the bootloader is coded to only boot from there (unless you use a modified one - a binary patched one does not count as modified in this case.)

Why did you think the other one would work, if the directory wasn't .rockbox?
