Partition disappearence on IPOD Nano
« on: September 06, 2007, 12:38:50 AM »
Hello.
I'm using ipod nano.

Sometimes the player writes "cannot find the partition" and then i enter menu and come back - then the player playbacks as usual.

It can be turned off and on and it can play well after it. But after it it cannot be detected by Windows. Partition manager in Windows shows that the partition on IPOD is not formatted.

So I need to reformat it and to copy the rockbox files back, and the music too.
Why?
There was no such a problem with iAudio.

What SVN revision are you using?

13990.
It seems the thing that disappears is some kind of partition marks. Though the remained part of partition marks is enough for RockBox, it's not enough for Windows.

Or even I meant file system marks, not the partition marks. As I see, the partitions remain untouched - 78 mb + 3.7 gb.

And, it seems, the file system marks disappear after some connection to an unknown computer.

Do you remember the part of the forum guidelines you agreed to abide by which said words to the effect of:

"you're required to be running the current build before asking for support"

?

The current build does not play on my ipod nano at all. 13990 is the latest working daily build.

And I can notice, you are not so polite and trying to make the aking person feel himself unfriendly.

No-one is going to try to fix a bug that occurs in such an old release. I'm just telling you so you know you're wasting your time asking.

Chances are, the problem you are experiencing is fixed in a later build. This is why it is required for you to run the latest build. Try completely resetting the ipod using itunes, then reinstall rockbox with the latest build and see if that works. If you still have the partition problem, come back and ask about it again.

Just because it doesn't work for you doesn't mean it doesn't work at all. Otherwise a lot more people would be having that problem ;)

tvg: I could imagine that both of your problems are related.

The issue you have with current rockbox builds seems to have to do with your hardware. Probably there are some small differences with the flash memory in the affected Nanos, unfortunately it's not figured out yet. Which is why I think that it's not very surprising that you experience other problems especially with the "disk" (like you describe) too.

One problem with it is also that no developer has such a problematic Nano available, so your only chance is to be patient or if it's really that important to you, maybe you can try to find an interested developer you could lend your Nano for a while.

But I also assume that the problem can be with Ipod USB software and specific computer.

And also can be related to internal RockBox logic: it needs less information for partition detection, isn't it?

What do you mean? I'm having a hard time understanding what you're trying to say.

The information that rests on flash partition is enough for rockbox to "feel" the file system, but it isn't enough for windows. I meant this.

So wouldn't that make this a windows problem anyway, if it were true?

All I'm saying is, please don't report bugs if you're going to insist on using an outdated build, there's nothing that can be done to fix them.
