Before I install
« on: September 04, 2007, 09:39:39 AM »
Before I install the bootloader on my 80GB iPod Video, I need to know.  Are there giant risks here?  What's the worst that could happen, my iPod doesn't boot and i uninstall rockbox?

Pretty much.

The ipod is almost entirely un-brickable - and certainly nothing Rockbox does to it during either operation or installation is capable of rendering it inoperable.

Alright, thanks!  I'm about to run ipodpatcher.exe

It's easier to brick it with programs like ipodwizard, right?  I've dealt with bricks before on my phone, it's not fun lol

RBUtil simplifies the installation process for you. It does the dirty work so you don't have to. :)

It does, but RBUtil installs the bootloader, plus a build, plus fonts, plus themes...

Okay, that was a wee bit complicated. RBUtil, basically, is like an "all-in-one" installer for Rockbox. It installs and uninstalls everything for you.

Ooh.  Well I already extracted .rockbox onto my iPod, so I should just use ipodpatcher.exe right?

I'm sorry i'm asking so many questions, I always just make sure of things when doing things like this.

Since you made it that far, go ahead and finish off with iPodpatcher.

Hmmm...I installed it, it loaded.  It looks kinda ugly though lol.  Now, how do I load my songs?  I read it somewhere but I forgot.

And will it play songs I bought from iTunes?

That's because you need to install themes and fonts, which, as LambdaCalculus suggested to you, can be done with the Rockbox Utility.

Oh, lol, sorry I'm a noob.  Should I uninstall the bootloader and kill the .rockbox folder?  Then use the rockbox program?

You can keep everything there. Just launch RBUtil and bring in some themes and the font pack.

And you can use iTunes to still sync your music, but Rockbox does not (and may never!) support DRM'd music you buy from iTunes or Napster. There are tools out there to strip DRM off the music files you buy, but I'm not about to go into that subject, ever.
