shuffling all songs quickly, dir cache not working?

(1/1)

gnychis:
Hey all,

I've searched for the forums for the proper way to "shuffle" the ipod, as in making a random playlist of every song on the device.

I have turned dir caching on, and then I go to database and hold the middle mouse button down on 'Tracks' and click playlist, then click 'insert shuffled'

Now it takes 5 minutes for it to read all of the song's information.  From what I read, if dir caching is on this should only take a couple seconds after the first time you do it.  But it continues to take this long over and over.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!
George

polygonal:
I don't think you should do this from database, because when you insert all from the "tracks" entry, the database might try to read the title of each, which of course takes time... Have you tried doing that from file browser? Do context menu on the folder that contains all your music, and playlist -> insert shuffled.

Chronon:
Also, Directory Cache speeds up browsing of the file tree, not Database queries.  Read about Directory Cache HERE.

In addition to polygonal's advice, make sure you have "Recursively Insert Directories" turned on in the playlist menu.
