Try holding MENU+SELECT together for up to about 30 seconds.

Leave the iPod plugged into a wall charger (not USB) for 24 hrs then try again.  The battery needs to get to a minimum level before the iPod will turn on.

This seems to be a rather common problem with the iPods, but this is not caused by Rockbox. This is a problem that is caused by Apple's firmware.

24 hours is probably a little overkill, but it needs a good long charge (from the wall adapter to ensure sufficient current).

Thanx, fixed it!

In my case, I don't believe it had anything to do with battery life as having read about the shorter battery life under rockbox, I watched the battery indicator pretty carefully. I shut down Rockbox when battery was at around 50%.

GodEater's instructions solved it for me without charging the ipod:

Charge your ipod for a LONG time - at *least* two hours before you try anything else.

*Then* do a hard reset by doing the following :

Hold switch to on.
Hold switch to off.
Press and hold both MENU and SELECT for at least 30 seconds, or until your ipod restarts.

After boot, the battery was still around 50% under Apple's Firmware (thats the one I booted just to be on the safe side).

You can find similar reports from people using unmodded Apple firmware on Apple's forums.
